November 2016 was a dark time for many of us. I’ll never forget how it felt like something amazing was about to happen only for that feeling to be chipped away bit by bit as the electoral votes came in.
For me, it wasn’t so much about the change in party or that the candidate that I preferred didn’t win. Rather, it was more about the ideals that were being replaced. Like staring too long before the Mirror of Erised and having it taken away, there was a complete paradigm shift. My worldview went from hope for what could be to the harsh reality of what it was.
That meant it was time to roll up my sleeves and get to work. It’s time to rise up!
Now’s the time to rise up for CA-25 candidate Jess Phoenix
"If you've ever said you would join Dumbledore's Army if you'd follow the Mockingjay if you'd fight back against the Empire: Now's the time." – Sarah Gailey
Shortly after the election, I recall seeing a meme quoting Sarah Gailey with a call to action that really spoke to me. You see, I’m a geek at heart: a lover of knowledge, reason, truth, dreams and imagination, I felt led to get involved. I wanted to join Dumbledore’s Army. I wanted to follow the Mockingjay. I wanted to fight back against the Empire.
We have a Phoenix to lead us
And now, you can fight back with us! In fact, right here in California’s 25th district, there is a great group of volunteers regularly fighting against climate-change denier Steve Knight; it’s like we have our own version of the Order of the Phoenix. Volunteering with this group of people is not only a pleasure, it also provides such a great sense of unity and connection. And we’re all brought together by Jess and her vision.
Candidate Jess Phoenix embodies the very spirit of Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix — and not just because of her name. Like Harry Potter, Jess has integrity and grit. She stands up for the truth and evidence-based policy in a post-truth world. She finds creative solutions to difficult problems. She believes in lifting up the the disenfranchised, less fortunate and she gives them voices and representation. She defends those unable to defend themselves while teaching others to do so alongside her. And she fearlessly faces down volcanoes like it’s just another day at the office.
Her scientific background is a much needed asset in Congress. Not only does she bring her expertise as a volcanologist to the table, she’s also able to replace climate-change denier Steve Knight on the House Science Committee – as a freshman congressperson.
But Jess is far more than all of that. She’s also a beacon of hope and an agent of change.
After all, the hallmark of a good leader is one that inspires you to believe in them. But the legacy of a great leader is one who inspires you to believe in yourself. If you’re looking for a leader to inspire you, go meet Jess Phoenix. You’ll be glad you did.
Let’s put on the sorting hat and find out how you can help send Jess to Congress.
