Ignorance is NOT Bliss – Support Education and CA-25 Candidate Jess Phoenix
It’s easy to become disillusioned with politics. Frankly, it’s hard not to become disillusioned with politics. And, disappointment is nearly inevitable, when you’re researching politicians. So, when you’re lucky enough to find an honest, intelligent, & compassionate Congressional Candidate like Jess Phoenix who is not a career politician, it’s kind of like winning the CA State Lottery, The Kentucky Derby, and the Pillsbury Bake-Off all on the same day.
Jess is a Geologist so, not only are her policies evidence-based, she’s literally and figuratively down-to-earth.
For example, Jess’ Education plan is based on the common-sense hypothesis that “Every child deserves a world-class education that gives them the opportunity and skills to compete.” Unfortunately, this ideology runs counter to that of Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos whose creed seems not so much “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing,” as “Any knowledge is a dangerous thing.”
Jess’s Education Agenda
As a scientist and an educator, Jess is instead offering up a wildly subversive agenda which equates Education with learning, thought, and the acquisition of information. In the service of this philosophy, Jess proposes the following strategies:
- Support free college. Decrease student loans, increase grants.
- Measure individual student growth and achievement
- Bring scientists, doctors and other role models into classrooms.
- Increase funding for teacher pay. Reduce class sizes.
- Support equal school funding.
In the USA, we believe that you can grow up to be anything you want to be. However, in order to realize your fondest dreams, you will require a proper education. Unless, of course, you’re lucky enough to be born into a family of millionaires, or a family of reality stars, or—best of all—a family of millionaire reality stars! But even then you might benefit from some business education or baseline math skills in order to avoid being swindled by your Accountant, Business Manager, Personal Assistant, or opportunistic Yorkie-Poo. Remember: Ignorance is not bliss. Knowledge is power. Education is our passport to the future.
In the video, Jess quotes Carl Sagan, and it is worth repeating:
“Almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.”
