“I Want You to Science,” declares Jess Phoenix on her campaign poster. But that doesn’t mean she’s asking you to run out and get a PhD. “We are all born scientists,” she believes. “We spend our lives exploring, testing, making observations. That’s what science is all about.”
That natural curiosity has driven her all her life. As a child, Jess read voraciously. She majored in history and wanted to become an English professor. But reading about the past wasn’t as fascinating as seeing it for herself, in the rock formations and volcanic activity that tell the story of our still-developing planet. She switched fields, earning a master’s degree in geology, specializing in volcanology. Jess also founded Blueprint Earth, a nonprofit research organization that collects a variety of data from a particular environment, including weather patterns, plant and animal life and the effect of human activity, and use it to create a complete picture of how a system works. She wants to bring that same, evidence-driven approach to politics. “Policy decisions need to be made looking at all the available facts, and working with people across fields,” says Jess. “That’s how you get the best policy.”
Field work in far-flung regions like Iceland and the Andes mountains has also taught her a lot about problem-solving, often with limited resources. Like the time she had to fix a blown-out tire with a piece of gum, a ballpoint pen and some duct tape. “It doesn’t matter what your problem is, if it’s an erupting volcano, a flat tire, God knows what. You just look at it, you take it apart piece by piece, and you figure out how you’re going to get out of the situation you’re in.”
Jess doesn’t claim to have all the answers, just the determination to keep asking questions. “There is no shame in not knowing something,” she insists. “The only shame is not being curious enough to find out.”
