Vote: Jess Phoenix for Congress–Scientist | CA-25 Candidate

We live in a strange day and age.  In today’s world, unlike in recent years, facts are under assault.  The nature of reality and the nature of truth are being questioned by some in our government.  Jess Phoenix, the Democratic candidate for California’s 25th Congressional district, provides the perfect antidote to this intellectual malaise.

“As scientists, we must be a light; we must be the beacon amidst the darkness.  That is our job.”—Jess Phoenix

Jess Phoenix offers evidence-based policy and solutions

Jess Phoenix is a scientist—a Volcanologist to be specific.  As such, she conducts her business in accordance with solid, verifiable information.  As a Congresswoman, her policy will be strictly evidence-based.  She will strive to answer questions with data and solve complex problems with input from multiple people and sources.

The same creative mind that led her to a life of Science will lead her to apply unique solutions to the many challenges that the 25th District faces.  Jess aspires to make the cities of her constituents a hub for Green Energy, utilizing the endless talents of local Aerospace veterans and entrepreneurs.  She hopes to bring a CalState University to her community to cultivate generations of future problem-solvers.  She dreams of hosting world-class concerts and big-ticket entertainment in her district, in order to expand the cultural and artistic profile of the Simi, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valleys.  But she doesn’t intend to wish these advances into existence—she will make them happen by harnessing the facts, figures and copious research required to advance each of these plans.

Science provides a clear road map for accomplishment.  And, against an anti-fact canvas, Jess’ future accomplishments will provide hope.

Bringing green tech to CA-25

Bringing green tech to CA-25

When Jess Phoenix looks into the future, she sees green.

“The backbone of my run for Congress here in CA-25 is making our region the global hub for green tech R&D,” she wrote on Twitter. The 25th district is ideally situated to be a research hub, says Jess, because “we have the space and the transport options needed to locate the global HQ for green tech right here.” Not to mention that companies like Northrup-Grumman and Lockheed Martin have already attracted top engineering talent to the region. “Our community has long been expert in aerospace manufacturing,” she enthuses. “And we have thousands of skilled people who can build the green tech we need for the future.”

So how can the district attract green industry? “By sending a scientist to Congress who understands the federal grant-making process,” she explains. “Just like Massachusetts lawmakers did for Boston, I will help my community get needed resources for kickstart our green jobs revolution.” Massachusetts has long offered benefits like research grants and tax incentives, as well as its world-class educational institutions, to attract tech companies to Boston. Jess wants to do the same for her district. “I want to encourage academic and trade skills education right here, too,” she says. “It will fuel the economic engine that can help us weather job losses from automation.”

Climate change is the greatest threat to national security

Advances in green technology, she believes, will have benefits that extend well beyond her own district. “We need to invest in it because climate change is the greatest threat to national security that we’re going to see in the next 50 years.” Jess wants to make the 25th district part of the solution. “We have a tremendous opportunity to lead the way globally and help prepare for automation and climate change,” she believes. “Our potential is limitless.”

Science fiction stars hosted Science Mayday in support of CA-25 Candidate Jess Phoenix

Science fiction stars support CA-25 Candidate Jess Phoenix

Last night, stars of the science fiction world turned out in Hollywood in support of CA-25 Candidate Jess Phoenix. There is a Science Mayday alarm sounding, and stars are supporting Jess in leaps and bounds.  Jess is a science superstar, and the science fiction community loves her. And no wonder, she even launched her campaign at the Vasquez Rocks, an iconic location right here in our district. It’s also the site of a famous Star Trek battle where Captain Kirk battles a lizard creatured called Gorn. Here’s a clip to refresh your memory.

The event was held at IgnitedSpaces on Hollywood Boulevard and was hosted by stars from the world of science fiction like:

  • Bruno Amato
  • Eric Balfour
  • John Billingsley
  • Mary Chieffo
  • Chad Coleman
  • Aron Eisenberg
  • Spencer Garrett
  • Terry Matalas
  • Mary E. McGlynn
  • Bill Prady
  • Randi Mayem Singer
  • Tara Strong
  • Christopher Titus
  • Wil Wheaton and
  • Joss Whedon

Some of the stars gave speeches in support of Jess, and we’d like to share some of the highlights with you here.

Joss Whedon has been in the trenches for a while. We’ll let him tell you about it….

Eric Balfour has a new baby on the way, and he’s concerned about the future. Jess offers a future that makes him feel safe for his child.

John Billingsley supports Jess and encourges you to support her as well.

At a recent candidate debate, Jess was asked about her celebrity supporters. Of course it’s kind of cool to have support from these people, but when you think about the world of science fiction, it makes a lot of sense. Science fiction holds up a mirror to our society. It exposes not only the ills of today’s society, it also offers creative solutions.

If we are truly to live long and prosper, we need candidates like Jess Phoenix in office who have the expertise to save the planet from ourselves. Jess is not afraid to run toward a volcano to study; she’s not afraid to tackle the challenges faced not only by our district but also our nation.

How can you answer the science mayday?

There’s only another month until the California Primary. The most important thing you can do is vote. If you need help with registering to vote, we have some resources available to you to help you out. Also, vote by mail ballots go out on May 7th.  If you are able, please consider making a donation.

CA-25-Jess Phoenix – I Want You To Science!

CA-25-Jess Phoenix – I Want You To Science!

“I Want You to Science,” declares Jess Phoenix on her campaign poster. But that doesn’t mean she’s asking you to run out and get a PhD. “We are all born scientists,” she believes. “We spend our lives exploring, testing, making observations. That’s what science is all about.”

That natural curiosity has driven her all her life. As a child, Jess read voraciously. She majored in history and wanted to become an English professor. But reading about the past wasn’t as fascinating as seeing it for herself, in the rock formations and volcanic activity that tell the story of our still-developing planet. She switched fields, earning a master’s degree in geology, specializing in volcanology. Jess also founded Blueprint Earth, a nonprofit research organization that collects a variety of data from a particular environment, including weather patterns, plant and animal life and the effect of human activity, and use it to create a complete picture of how a system works. She wants to bring that same, evidence-driven approach to politics. “Policy decisions need to be made looking at all the available facts, and working with people across fields,” says Jess. “That’s how you get the best policy.”

Field work in far-flung regions like Iceland and the Andes mountains has also taught her a lot about problem-solving, often with limited resources. Like the time she had to fix a blown-out tire with a piece of gum, a ballpoint pen and some duct tape. “It doesn’t matter what your problem is, if it’s an erupting volcano, a flat tire, God knows what. You just look at it, you take it apart piece by piece, and you figure out how you’re going to get out of the situation you’re in.”

Jess doesn’t claim to have all the answers, just the determination to keep asking questions. “There is no shame in not knowing something,” she insists. “The only shame is not being curious enough to find out.”
