Upon her election to Congress, Jess Phoenix, the Democratic candidate for California’s 25th Congressional district, intends to do something nearly unprecedented—she plans to be nice. In today’s toxic, polarized political climate, her ability to be warm and amiable might qualify as subversive. Her compatriots, on either side of the aisle, may be wholly unprepared for behavior of this ilk. But Jess is all about changing perceptions and shattering stereotypes, so this is the kind of innovation she hopes to foster.
Send someone nice to Congress- Jess Phoenix
Granted, good nature is not a pre-requisite for political service. If it were, our nation’s capital would be the biggest ghost town since Bodie, California. But wouldn’t it be awesome to re-introduce pleasantness to Washington, DC? Concepts like “give and take,” “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” and “live and let live,” are on life support. Courtesy is a dying art. And collegial politicians are on the endangered species list.
We all agree that Congress would benefit from a dose of common sense—as a scientist, Jess will bring that to the table, too—but perhaps an injection of congeniality would be just the sort of revolution we could all get behind.
If Jess can simply act as a “carrier” of this condition, spreading decency through her example, it’s possible an outbreak of compassion or agreeableness might follow. And—really, in the spirit of equal opportunity—don’t we want to bring some token kind people into our government? Isn’t that what the concept of integration is all about?
Take a stand for diversity. Send someone nice to Congress. It’s SO crazy, it JUST… MIGHT… WORK…
