Get to know Jess Phoenix, Candidate for California’s 25th district

For those of you who still have not had the great pleasure of meeting Jess Phoenix, the Democratic candidate for California’s 25th Congressional district, we have crafted this short introductory video.

Jess is a candidate unlike any other you have seen; she is a volcano scientist, an educator, and the founder of a successful environmental non-profit. She has worked in multiple fields on multiple continents, survived an encounter with (surprisingly friendly) narco-traffickers, and appeared on Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. How has Jess amassed these diverse experiences? It’s simple, really—she believes in saying “Yes,” to life. She actively embraces challenges and adventures rather than making excuses. Her determination and intrepid spirit will serve her constituents well when she represents CA-25 in Washington, DC.

And—in complete opposition to the current zeitgeist—Jess’ policy decisions will be strictly evidence-based.

Jess is not a career politician, she is a local who has—against all odds—built a strictly grass-roots campaign with the positive energy of countless volunteers. She is a devoted wife, a good friend, and a steadfast supporter of animals who shares her home and her life with all kinds of adorable critters. She is a Democrat who understands and likes those on the proverbial “other side of the aisle”—after all, some of her best parents are Republicans! And, having worked in both grade schools and coal mines, Jess understands the importance of communication and compromise with people of all different kinds. She will work with anybody.

If you want a Congresswoman who will care about your physical, academic, economic, and environmental well-being, you need to vote for Jess Phoenix. Those are the facts and—even today—facts matter.

Bringing green tech to CA-25

Bringing green tech to CA-25

When Jess Phoenix looks into the future, she sees green.

“The backbone of my run for Congress here in CA-25 is making our region the global hub for green tech R&D,” she wrote on Twitter. The 25th district is ideally situated to be a research hub, says Jess, because “we have the space and the transport options needed to locate the global HQ for green tech right here.” Not to mention that companies like Northrup-Grumman and Lockheed Martin have already attracted top engineering talent to the region. “Our community has long been expert in aerospace manufacturing,” she enthuses. “And we have thousands of skilled people who can build the green tech we need for the future.”

So how can the district attract green industry? “By sending a scientist to Congress who understands the federal grant-making process,” she explains. “Just like Massachusetts lawmakers did for Boston, I will help my community get needed resources for kickstart our green jobs revolution.” Massachusetts has long offered benefits like research grants and tax incentives, as well as its world-class educational institutions, to attract tech companies to Boston. Jess wants to do the same for her district. “I want to encourage academic and trade skills education right here, too,” she says. “It will fuel the economic engine that can help us weather job losses from automation.”

Climate change is the greatest threat to national security

Advances in green technology, she believes, will have benefits that extend well beyond her own district. “We need to invest in it because climate change is the greatest threat to national security that we’re going to see in the next 50 years.” Jess wants to make the 25th district part of the solution. “We have a tremendous opportunity to lead the way globally and help prepare for automation and climate change,” she believes. “Our potential is limitless.”

Remember to register to vote by May 21st for the primary. Check out Jess’s positions on the issues, including green tech and climate change on her campaign site, https://Jess2018.com.

Jess Phoenix for Congress (CA-25)

I’m the maker of the Jess dolls and I make them slowly one stitch at a time. I never thought I would be doing political crochet. I made dolls for Bernie Sanders to raise money for him, and this is the first time I’ve been moved to do the same for a local candidate.

My own small scale effort is one of the indicators that Jess is truly running a grassroots campaign. She isn’t raking in the dough from corporate PAC money. She isn’t propelled by independent expenditures. Following the example set by Bernie Sanders, political hopefuls across the country are running on platforms that the American people believe in. Now, more than ever, real people are coming together to do what they can to support candidates not compromised by big money.

Jess is a Democrat running in our historically conservative California district 25. Our district now has more registered Democrats than Republicans. Our district voted for Hillary over Trump. Our district is going to be a part of the blue tsunami in November. But on June 5th, we have the opportunity to choose the most progressive, for the people, Democrat to replace our incumbent (Trump supporting) representative.

Jess Phoenix has inspired me to want to help her campaign in the biggest way that I can. Phone banking, canvassing, and VOTING for her on June 5th, are huge necessities for campaigns like hers. But money is kind of the biggest concern right now. $2700 is the limit any person can donate to one campaign. I would venture a guess that most people cannot or do not donate that amount. I’m not a wealthy person, but I felt compelled to find a way to donate as much money up to the limit as I can.

Back in November of 2017, I met Jess Phoenix for the first time. I was still reeling from the shock of the Trump presidency, a whole year after he was elected. Listening to her answer questions and talk about her platform in a small meet and greet aroused in me the same hope for our nation that I felt during Bernie Sanders’ 2016 primary run. That very night, I asked her the awkward question, “Can I make and sell dolls of you, and donate the proceeds to your campaign?” She was all for it!

As of writing this article, I’ve been able to sell enough dolls to donate $950 ($50 per doll), as well as five dolls given straight to the campaign. With less than three weeks to go until the June 5th primary, I still have room to take many more orders for Jess dolls. I offer two designs, one of her in her volcanologist outfit and holding a volcanic rock, and one of her in her signature suit. I love that I can donate to her by working a few hours at a time, making these dolls. I can still be at home with my family and take care of my young children.

If you are able to, please find a way to help her campaign. Come up with your own way of making money specifically for the purpose of donating (at Jess2018.com). Have a yard sale and donate the money. If you are a creator, make something to sell and donate the money. If you can’t think of anything like this to do, go out on one of the days they are canvassing. Spend a couple hours phone banking. If you have something to say about how awesome you think Jess is, and why people should vote for her, you can write something for this blog! We can do this if we all DO SOMETHING.

Obviously, one way you can help is by purchasing one of my Jess dolls. You can find both doll options right at the top of my online shop: www.LeenGreenBean.Etsy.com.

Upon finalizing this blog for publishing, I’ve decided to also donate any proceeds from my Bernie Sanders items (I have a baby blanket, a crochet pattern for making the Bernie doll, and the dolls themselves).

Move!

Making another Jess Phoenix doll. I thought it was perfectly suitable to make a red headed doll in a green shirt on St. Patrick's Day. #leengreenbean #crochet #yarn #crochetdoll #crochetdolls #timelapsecrochet #crochettimelapse #timelapse #timelapsephotography #timelapsevideo #etsy #etsyshop #etsyseller #dollmaking #dolls #customdolls #handmade #jessphoenix #jess2018 @jessphoenix2018 #stpatricksday
