According to (CNN); More young Americans are saying they will vote in the upcoming midterm elections than in the last two midterms, according to a new national poll released Tuesday by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics.
“This movement has real potential to change the course of engagement for a generation,” said Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, director of the Tufts Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement. “If they can bring about an incredible surge in turnout, I think they’ll change the way that us adults view young people as voting blocs.” The lead-up to this year’s midterm elections, though, is seeing a surge in youth interest. A recent march organized by the Parkland students attracted more than 500,000 people to Washington, D.C. and many more in state capitals around the country. A number of young people are upset at congressional inaction on gun violence and the gutting of safety, environmental, and worker protections under the Trump administration.
We’ve seen this same enthusiasm from our youth right here in Santa Clarita and other cities in CA-25 also in schools and demonstrations all over California.
In The Past; young voters have had poor turnout at the polls: Let’s Turn This Around and Turn CA-25 Blue with Jess!

·Van Sickles·Comments Off on Vote Jess Phoenix for Congress – Gun Control a Must
Teen shot in arm at Highland High School in Palmdale, California; suspect in custody.
“A shooting just happened at a high school in Palmdale where I spoke on Monday. Fortunately, only one student was injured and the kid who did the shooting is in custody. The kids and teachers who had to feel that terror this morning are forever changed. I keep telling people that it’s not a matter of “if” your life will be impacted by gun violence, but “when.” Palmdale is no different than Littleton, Newtown, or Parkland.
Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insane. We must change our gun culture, our gun laws, and the ways we track guns and study the epidemic’s causes and solutions.
This is all a huge factor in why I’m running for Congress”. #NeverAgain
(CNN) A 14-year-old boy is in custody on suspicion of shooting a teen in the arm at a Southern California high school Friday morning, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
The shooting happened at or near Highland High School in Palmdale around 7 a.m. PT, even as some students still were arriving at school, sheriff’s Capt. Darren Harris said.
The names of neither the suspect nor the wounded teen, also 14, were immediately released. The suspect is a former student who left the school in April, LA Sheriff Capt. Darren Harris said.
The injured student brought himself to a hospital and is expected to recover fully, Harris said.
It’s the 21st school shooting in the United States this year.
Witnesses who were outside the school described hearing a gunshot or gunshots, and seeing students running from the building.
The suspect was apprehended near a Vons grocery store about a mile from the school, a Los Angeles County fire official said. Authorities found a rifle believed to have been used in the shooting “a distance away (from the school) in the desert,” Harris said.

·CA-25-4 Jess 2018·Comments Off on Santa Clarita City Council – What is a Sanctuary City? – CA-25-Jess2018
There’s no single definition of what is a sanctuary city, but generally speaking,
it’s a city (or a county, or a state) that limits its cooperation with federal immigration enforcement agents in order to protect low-priority immigrants from deportation, while still turning over those who have committed serious crimes. This is why we prefer the term “safe cities”. Read More on America’s Voice, (Updated March 9, 2018)
Why we must protect Santa Clarita Dreamers!
In the report, Tom K. Wong, an associate professor of political science at the University of California, San Diego, analyzed a sample of 2,492 counties from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) dataset. In this sample, 602 were identified by ICE as “sanctuary” counties, where local law enforcement didn’t accept “detainers”—requests from ICE to hold suspected undocumented individuals in custody for extra time. Wong compared the crime rates and economic conditions in these counties with the ones that did comply with ICE, controlling for population and demographic characteristics.
He found 35.5 fewer violent and property crimes per 10,000 people in sanctuary counties versus non-sanctuary ones—“a result that is highly statistically significant.” Counties in large metros reported an even more dramatically difference, with 65.4 fewer crimes per 10,000 people.
Sanctuary counties also registered better economic conditions. On average, they had higher median incomes (by about $4,353), lower poverty (by 2.3 percent), and slightly lower unemployment rates (1.1 percent). These positive effects were exaggerated in the small counties, where the contributions of each individual immigrant were likely to have a larger impact.
But when it’s all said and done… It’s The Right Thing To Do
Santa Clarita City Council members said Tuesday it would put Senate Bill 54 and its status as a non-sanctuary city on the May 8 meeting agenda. The council will decide if it wants to file an amicus brief in support of a national lawsuit against the state of California regarding S.B. 54, also known as the California Values Act.
Please come to City Hall – Santa Clarita to show our City Council members what we really think and feel. News conference starts at 4 pm and the council meeting is at 7 pm Good lives depend on it, and No One should Live in Fear!!!
